Madeline (Maddy) Haskell is an honor roll student who recently started 8th grade at Chesterton Middle School. She has performed in school talent shows since she was 8 years old and is a member of the Chesterton Middle School choir. Maddy participated in the 2012 Circle the State choir concert and was selected in 2011and 2013 to sing the National Anthem at the Gary South Shore Railcats baseball games. In July, she was selected to compete in the 2013 Texaco Country Showdown.  Maddy is an amateur songwriter and considers music her life. She is never without some sort of music playing around her and has been singing since she could talk.  She loves tennis and has been taking lessons for four years. She hopes to continue playing tennis competitively throughout her high school and college years. Maddy isn’t sure what career path to take yet, but is interested in dentistry and law enforcement. Hanging out with her friends and shopping are some of the things she likes to do in her free time. Being chosen to perform in Hoosier STAR is an honor and she would like to thank her family, friends and her sponsors..  She could never have come this far without the support of everyone and her love of singing.

Known as “the little girl with the big voice”, Jade Kuzak was born and spent the first ten years of her life in Canada where she began singing at the age of 4.  She taught herself to sing by listening to her favorite singer and inspiration, Celine Dion.  She began competing in vocal competitions at the age of 13 and often performs the National Anthem for sporting events.  A 4.0 student, she has also performed in school concerts, musicals, her church and her high school’s top advanced choir.  Jade describes herself as driven, creative and courageous, and she loves being involved, trying new things, taking risks and of course, singing.  Winning moneys from previous singing competitions were donated by Jade to the Aboutface Charity in honor of her little sister, Jayla, who was born with facial disfigurements (cleft lip/palate).  Jade hopes to attend one of the best performing arts colleges in the world, Juilliard.  If she were to win Hoosier STAR 2013, she would place the prize money toward her college fund.  She is grateful for everything that has happened and wants to thank her family, friends and especially her parents for supporting her dreams, which include attending Juilliard, studying for finals in her New York apartment, performing on every stage around the world and winning a Grammy.

(13) – La Porte, IN

Shania Povlock is an 8th grader at Kesling Middle School, where she is now in her second year of show choir.  She was so happy when she found out she was selected as a Hoosier STAR finalist this year. It is a dream come true to be able to experience the opportunity of performing with a live orchestra.  Being selected for Hoosier STAR has already opened up some great things for her, such as auditioning and being selected to sing the National Anthem for the University of Notre Dame at one of its sporting events this fall.  Shania has loved singing ever since she could talk and she often states, “Singing makes me happy!”  During the past two years she has volunteered at IU Health La Porte Hospital by singing in the lobby at Christmas time and on the 6th floor for Nursing Home Week. She loves bringing smiles to the staff and patients’ faces.  Shania also enjoys singing and being in plays at her church, hanging out with her friends and going on trips with her family.  She would like to thank her mom for always believing and being there for her, her family for all their love and support in helping her get this far and her vocal coach, Nanda Danitschek (Hoosier STAR 2010 Adult Winner) for all her help. Shania would like to dedicate her song Hoosier STAR performance to the angel who watches over her, her little sister, Makenna, who passed away at the age of 2 ½!

(17) – Niles, MI

A senior at Niles High School, Abby Rose Rzepka’s love for singing began when she was only 4 years old at a family wedding.  She recalls running up on the stage, taking the microphone and breaking out singing, “How Do I Live” by Leanne Rimes.  Since then, she has always been comfortable on stage.  When she was 11, she had the amazing experience of touring and performing with Kenny Rogers during his Christmas tour.  Recently, she played the lead roles of Ariel in Disney’s The Little Mermaid and Belle in Disney’s Beauty and The Beast.  Abby is also involved in a trio group that her two friends and she created, called “Expression.”  In 2011, this trio won first place at the Berrien County Fair Talent Show.  That same year, they auditioned and were selected to sing the National Anthem at the B100 Birthday Bash.  They met many famous country artists, including her favorite, Hunter Hayes.  Her most recent performances include two musicals, Shrek and Phantom of The Opera.  Abby is overjoyed at having been chosen as a Hoosier STAR 2013 finalist.  She is honored and looks forward to this exciting experience.

Julia Wahl is a freshman at Michigan City High School.  She has been singing for as long as she can remember.  Julia has acted in four plays with Young People’s Theatre Company and performed the roles of Belle in Beauty and the Beast and Ariel in The Little Mermaid.  She began playing the guitar at the age of 9 and continues to enjoy and share this talent with others.  Julia has also taken dance lessons since she was 4 years old and performs in area dance programs.  Julia’s love for music continues to grow due to all of these experiences, and she is thrilled to have the opportunity to perform in Hoosier STAR with the Hoosier STAR Orchestra!
